A lonely laundry-man from the sub-urbs of Calcutta finds companionship in an unclaimed red dress which triggers esoteric memories of the past.

ABHIROOP BASU is an award-winning Director and Screenwriter based out of Calcutta. A student of South Point High School and St. Xavier’s College Calcutta, Abhiroop went on to study films at the prestigious Prague Film School, Czech Republic and further did a masterclass on screenwriting with Iranian Filmmaker Mani Haghighi. He was also part of a select Masterclass programme at Alt Studio, Tuscany.
Abhiroop’s 11 min dialogue-less short Meal, starring Adil Hussain, went on to over 60 International film festivals worldwide, winning multiple awards. Meal premiered on Mubi India rated at a high of 8.3. Oscar-Winning Director Thomas Vinterberg called Abhiroop’s Meal “Shocking and Real..” during the film’s World Premiere at the Oscar Qualifying 44th Odense Intrnational Film Festival Denmark, 2019.
Abhiroop’s next was Laali, starring Pankaj Tripathi, premiered at the Dharamshala International Film Festival 2020 amidst rave reviews. The film went on to over 20 International film festivals also winning the Top Prize at New York City SAFF ’21 and Indie Meme Film Festival Texas. Laali was later acquired by Disney Plus Hotstar and was the first short film to trend at #1 on the platform for a month.
Abhiroop’s recent works include a dark comedy starring Geetanjali Kulkarni titled Rhino Charge and an international co-production titled Gudgudi, starring Rajshri Deshpande both travelling film festivals worldwide.
Abhiroop has previously co-written a show with Bejoy Nambiar for Netflix. He is currently in the development of two feature films as Writer and Director slated to go on floors soon.
